A dependant or family visa allows individuals to move to the UK to join a family member who already lives here. The person already living in the UK needs to have British Citizenship, settled status or proof of permanent residence.
If the person applying for the visa does not have a UK visa already, the application will be made outside of the UK. This applies to EU nationals and non-EU citizens since Brexit. EU nationals with pre-settled status must have started living in the UK before 1 January 2021.

What are the criteria to be considered a dependant?
To qualify as a dependant on a family visa, you must be the spouse, partner, fiancé, proposed civil partner, child, or parent of the sponsor. You will need a visa to live with your family in the UK for more than 6 months.
Can I work on a dependant visa?
Doctors on a dependant visa cannot work in a trainee role. They must apply for their own skilled worker visa or health and care worker visa. The individual visa must be referred to for specific restrictions but the visa normally permits work.
How long does the visa last?
You can stay in the UK for 2 years and 9 months on this visa. After this, you’ll need to apply to extend your stay.
Are there any restrictions?
If the person with the right to live in the UK leaves, the family member on the dependant visa will also lose the right to work.
How much does it cost?
The cost to apply from outside of the UK is £1,523 per person. You will also need to pay the healthcare surcharge each year, which is £470 per year for visa and immigration applicants who are under the age of 18 at the time of application and £624 per year for all other visa and immigration applicants.
What do I need to provide?
You will need to provide proof of knowledge of the English language either in the form of academic qualification or a test.
You will need to give proof of income. You and your partner must have a combined income of at least £18,600 a year if you are applying as a partner or want to get indefinite leave to remain within 5 years. You will need to prove you have extra money for your children, you’ll need an extra £3,800 for your first child and £2,400 for each additional child.
How long does it take?
If you are applying from outside the UK, the decision will usually be made within 12 weeks. You can pay an extra £800 for the super-priority service to get a faster decision.
